Fish Taco Woes
Don’t I know it.
Last night I had the most pathetic attempt at a fish taco that I have ever experienced.
It all started innocently enough. Neighbor D and I went to dinner. Neighbor D is my resident computer-expert-slash-Cecilia-backup. Recently he had cured my current laptop, formatted an old laptop so I can sell it and generally been helpful with Cecilia. So I wanted to take him to dinner as a thank you.
Fortunately, Neighbor D’s girlfriend (Neighbor K) is cool with this. Partly because she’s a vegetarian and ND and I are both foodies and meat eaters. K actually refers to me as D’s restaurant girlfriend. It works for us.
Anyway, we went to the Yellow Dog Tavern. I’ve had good experiences in the past, but last night will be my last visit to the Yellow Dog. Our service was poor and the dining room turned into Trivia Night (?) halfway through our meal.
And then there was the fish taco.
A corn tortilla that fell apart in my hands. Bland grilled mahi mahi. Chopped lettuce! Lettuce on a fish taco??? Oh cabbage, I’ve never missed you so much. [And it’s not like they were out of cabbage, because our short rib appetizer came with cole slaw.] A small splash of thin red tomato sauce-water masquerading as salsa. No creamy sauce. No heat. No tingle in my tummy. About the only thing they did right was to include lime wedges.
I feel like I need to paraphrase Lloyd Bentsen here:
I know fish tacos. I am friends with many fish tacos. And you, sir, are NO fish taco.
Rubios, won’t you open in Baltimore?
ahahahaha lettuce!!!!
Truly, you have my condolences. No one should be subjected to that barbaric idiocy.
So, does this mean you’ll be speeding up your trip to come out West??? 😉
Looks like I’m going to have to do some pre-Juice fish taco research in Reno. I know Tank will totally be on board to help. (Do you prefer the naked fish or, my fave, the deep fried crunchy coating?)
I like both, so I’ll be curious to see what you find. What a blessing little Tank is, to help you with your research!
We have a restaurant here in Des Moines with the yummiest fish tacos! I love love love them and their fish are naked. I once had a fish taco with breading and it was…not so much for me. 🙂
Good luck with the quest!
Well, if you and KK ever feel like wandering out to Half Moon Bay, we have many fine venues for fish tacos! (Glad you had such a great time in San Diego!)
