A Mare Island Walk

Last Saturday I took a road trip with the Sacramento Walking Sticks.  We met at the Park & Ride early in the morning.  Destination:  Mare Island.

To be honest, Mare Island isn’t actually an island.  It’s officially a peninsula, however seasonally it becomes an island.  For many years it was a naval installation.

The Flyway Festival was a great excuse to go for a walk.

The warehouse was full of vendors – art, crafts, nature-y kind of stuff, etc.

This was a small part of our group as we headed towards the wetlands.

Mare Island is on the Pacific Flyway, so a lot of birders were out with binoculars and cameras.

After exploring the wetlands we headed into the developed area of the island.  We toured the oldest surviving naval chapel, St. Peter’s Chapel.  It contains 25 Tiffany windows.

We were shaded by huge eucalyptus trees.

Best of all several butterflies promised that spring was just around the corner.

For the record I must point out that I did not take the last 3 pictures.  Walker C has much better photography skills than I do!
